Newcastle Under-21s battle to draw with impressive Fleetwood
Ciaran Kelly's goal earns young Magpies point on the road
Newcastle United Under-21s battled to a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Fleetwood Town Under-21s in the Premier League Cup on Tuesday night.
Ciaran Kelly's second-half penalty cancelled out Callum Morton's early opener for the hosts as Elliott Dickman's side extended their unbeaten run to three matches in the competition.
Fleetwood started the brighter of the two sides and took the lead after just six minutes when Morton fired home from close range after good work from Josh Bohui.
Newcastle gradually grew into the game and began to create chances of their own, with Joe White and Rodrigo Vilca both going close.
The visitors were level just after the hour mark when Kelly converted from the spot after Vilca had been brought down in the area.
Newcastle pushed for a winner in the closing stages but were unable to find a way through a resolute Fleetwood defence.
The draw leaves Newcastle in third place in Group F, two points behind leaders Arsenal.
